The organ always remained a central feature of Stanford's career as a composer and practical musician. His early education was within the organ lofts in Dublin and then he gained entrance into Queen’s College Cambridge as the first of the university’s organ scholars. He migrated to Trinity College, Cambridge and remained there until 1892. He then moved to London and towards the end of his life when the years of war depleted his income from royalties, the demand for new organ works offered some practical means of earning a meagre living. This CD is the first of a series to contain his complete organ works played by Daniel Cook, now the sub organist of Westminster Abbey.

"Cook's performances are irreproachable from a technical point of view, but they also vividly communicate the expressive character of the music, whether dramatic and fiery or tender and lyrical. These are magnificent performances and dazzling sound. I can foresee Cook's recordings becoming the benchmark for this repertory."                 American Record Guide
